Hawthorn East House
Hawthorn East House began as a modest two‑bedroom Edwardian home on a narrow site with a heritage overlay and limited access to natural light. The brief was to reshape the house to support a young family over the next decade, with spaces able to adapt as their needs evolved.
The plan is reorganised to create a clear distinction between private and public areas. The original Edwardian structure retains the bedrooms and quieter rooms, maintaining its scale and character. A new rear addition accommodates the kitchen, dining and living spaces in a layout suited to contemporary family life.
A central courtyard links the old and new sections. It introduces northern light deep into the plan and provides a garden outlook from the kitchen, living and dining areas. This courtyard becomes the project’s key organising element, resolving the site’s constraints and establishing a calm, day‑lit centre for the home.
