Bicheno House

Bicheno house

An extension to a 1930’s fisherman’s cottage in Bicheno on Tasmania's East Coast.

The original weatherboard home was originally crafted to be cosy and confined, seemingly impervious to the unique vista overlooking Waubs Bay.

Our design sought to celebrate the view across Waubs Bay, whilst retaining the cottage's original charm. Working within a modest budget, we were presented with a number of unusual challenges, such as penguin proofing the exterior to preserve the integrity of the local colony and working in a regional town through Tasmanian border closures.

The form of the addition seeks to continue the tradition of shed architecture found up and down the east coast of Tasmania. The simple gable form is joined to the original shack via a low glazed link to clearly delineate between old and new. The flexible floor plan allows for inter-generational holidays.
